He Whakatauki mo tenei wiki.

Tena Koutou Whanau

Pehea to kanikani, to korero Maori ranei inanahi? How did your dancing and korero Maori go yesterday? Kei te pai if you didn't get a chance to try, hopefully today's whakatauki might help. Whakatauki are proverbs that have been passed down for the use and benefit of future generations.

In the book, Aroha by Dr Hinemoa Elder, I found this whakatauki. Ara, anei te whakatauki mo tenei wiki - Tūwhitia te hopo! That's it, nice and simple. Translated it means "Banish your fears! or in other words, Feel the fear and do it anyway! We all know what it is like to not try something new in case we fail or embarass ourselve. This whakatauki is encouraging us this week to be brave. Whether it is learning to speak or sing in Te Reo, or another language. It may be the courage to learn a new skill/sport or even being brave enough to raise your hand in your Google Meet to ask a question.

Tūwhitia te hopo this week whanau! Ma te waa

Tongan Mea Kai - Ifo Ifo!

Malo famili

One last post from Tongan Language week.  My family and I decided to make two Tongan mea kai, Lu Sipi and Ota Ika.  It was a learning experience for us all, but oh boy was the food ifo ifo!

A Special Day for a Special Someone

 Malo famili

Yesterday was a special day for one of our Pt England Support Staff Superheros.  That's right, yesterday was Miss Timmi's birthday!  Yay!

With Auckland still in Level 4 lockdown, it made sharing this special day with Miss Timmi a little challenging.  We will be having a little Google Meet Birthday catch-up on Friday, but we still wanted to do something, to remind her how special she is to us.

An email was sent to the other PES Superheroes, with a very specific instruction, describe Miss Timmi in ONE word.  The replies came through thick and fast.  Here's a little something we put together from everyone's answers, to say from us, Happy Birthday Miss Timmi! We love and appreciate you!

Tongan Language Week 2021

Malo e lelei famili!

Fefe hake?  Sai pe?

Yesterday marked the beginning of Tongan Language Week 2021 here in Aotearoa.  This year’s theme for Uike Kātoanga’i ‘o e lea faka-Tonga - Tonga Language Week is Fakakoloa 'o Aotearoa 'aki 'a e Ako Lelei, which means enriching Aotearoa with holistic education.

The theme serves as a conversation starter on the importance of holistic education, diverse forms of learning and how Aotearoa can benefit from it.

To help build up your Tongan vocabulary this week, let's start with something small.  Let's try counting from one to ten!  Watch the video below to help you learn to count from one to ten in Tongan.

Come on, give it a go!  You might even find that some of the numbers sound similar to another language/s you know or have heard.
